Free Realms (FR) is a Massively Multi-player Online Game (MMOG) created by Sony Online Entertainment (SOE). FR was released on April 28, 2009 for the PC. Although SOE has has announced plans to come out with a PSP version of the game, a release date for that version is still unclear. Free Realms is a family-friendly game, aimed mostly at kids. It is set in a fantasy-type world.
Since its launch, Free Realms has gained over three million players. Eighteen days after launch, there were one million players in Free Realms. One month after release, Free Realms had two million players, and on June 12, 2009, Free Realms reached the three million players milestone.
Because of SOE's intent on making it a family-friendly game, FR focuses heavily on teamwork and socialization. In fact, combat in FR is entirely optional. On a player's profile page, they may set up polls, display their friend list, and perform other social networking functions.

Jobs
In Free Realms, players can choose to play using sixteen different jobs. Players may switch between jobs they have unlocked at any time. The currently available jobs are:
- Adventurer
- Archer
- Blacksmith
- Brawler
- Card Duelist
- Chef
- Demo Derby Driver
- Kart Driver
- Medic
- Miner
- Ninja
- Pet Trainer
- Postman
- Soccer Star
- Warrior
- Wizard
Players unlock jobs by going to trainers. Trainers will teach players how to use a job if the player completes a simple task that the trainer asks. Once a job is unlocked, you can switch to it anytime. Levels gained in one job stay it that job; so if you gain five levels as an Adventurer, those gained levels will only count towards the particular job in which they were earned.
To level up a job, players must earn experience points, known as Stars in FR. Stars may be gained by completing quests, collections, etc. Stars can not be traded. In most jobs, Stars may be used to level up abilities.
There are three categories of jobs:
Freestyle: Consists of Adventurer, Card Duelist, Demo Derby Driver, Kart Driver, Pet Trainer, Postman, and Soccer Star.
Combat: Consists of Archer, Brawler, Medic, Ninja, Warrior, and Wizard.
Crafting: Consists of Blacksmith, Chef, and Miner.
Certain items and clothing may be worn in any job in a specific category.
Quests, Minigames, and Collections
FR offers players a variety of ways to level up and have a fun experience. Some of the most prominent of these ways are quests, minigames, and collections. Below is a description of each:
Quests: Assigned by NPCs, quests give players specific tasks to complete. Once the assigned tasks are completed, the player may return to the NPC to receive a reward. Common rewards are coins, clothes, items, Treasure Tickets, and Stars.
Minigames: Minigames range from activities like harvesting ingredients to games of Tower Defense. Minigames almost always offer rewards, and if a player earns a high enough score, a spot on the leaderboards (you must be a Member to have your name listed on the leaderboards). Most minigames correspond with different jobs, such as the Mining minigame and the Miner job.
Collections: Collections are sets of different objects that, when one of each required object is obtained, form a collection. There are hundreds of collections in FR, and very few players have completed all of them. Pieces of collections are scattered throughout FR, and may be obtained by double-clicking on certain selectable objects.
Station Cash
Station Cash, or SC, is a form of currency available in most SOE games that is bought with real world currency. The rate of US dollars to SC is, respectively, 1 to 100. SC can be used to buy exclusive items, clothes, and equipment in FR.
SC may be obtained either by purchasing a SC Card (card containing a pre-set amount of SC, redeemable in-game), or purchasing it online, either at the official Free Realms website or at other official SOE websites.
